Federated Mountain Clubs

The Federated Mountain Clubs of New Zealand

(From the FMC 'Join A Club' pamphlet)

(Tramping/Climbing/Mountainbiking/Hunting/Skiing/and more)

Introducing FMC...

Federated Mountain Clubs of New Zealand is the national association of over 100 mountain clubs specialising in mountaineering, skiing, canoeing, mountainbiking and hunting. We have a total of some 12,000 members. FMC's objectives are to promote these activities, to promote training and safe use of the backcountry, and to promote its preservation and sound management. We also work to protect rights of access to the countryside. FMC publishes the FMC Bulletin, a quarterly magazine of news, views, philosophy and information which is distributed free to affiliated club members. All club members receive our discount card for travel, accommodation, etc.

Our member clubs range from single interest groups to large alpine and tramping clubs which often participate in mountaineering, tramping, skiing, canoeing, mountainbiking, hunting and walking. Clubs range in size from up to 600 members, running a range of trips each weekend, to small groups of 25 - 50 enthusiasts. Any club can introduce you to the great New Zealand outdoors, and you'll also meet some great friends on the way.

The Federation of Mountain Clubs was formed in 1931 with the following objectives...

  • To promote tramping, mountaineering, climbing, skiing, walking, hunting and other related outdoor activities in the mountains, natural lands, and countryside of New Zealand, to encourage the appreciation and enjoyment of the outdoors, the acquisition of skills and safe techniques, and to promote the better knowledge of these areas through literature, art and science.

  • To constitute a National Association of clubs involved in the above named recreations in New Zealand and to actively support those clubs in their activities.

  • To protect and maintain the rights of access to public lands, to promote and protect legal mechanisms for access through private land, and to advocate access to areas of recreational value where no legal right of access exists.

  • To protect the natural values of the mountains, natural lands and waters of New Zealand and to promote the sound management of every kind of recreation and sport connected with these areas, in the interests of those actively involved in such recreation and sport and for the public generally, and to take such action or otherwise as may be necessary to carry out those objects ant to maintain in perpetuity the quality of the environment necessarily implied by those objects.

  • To provide effective liaison with all members of the Federation and with all other organisations whose objects are akin to those of the Federation.
